Our Young Learners Winter Programmes is run at the
main LAL Fort Lauderdale school campus. Lessons are
held in classrooms in a designated area of the school.
The programme is offered to teenagers aged between
14 and 17. Students joining us for our winter programme
will experience first-hand the American way of life by
staying with our carefully selected host families with
easy access to the school (walking or biking distance
or a bus ride).

Host Family
This popular choice of accommodation is ideal for

teenagers interested in learning about and experiencing

first-hand — "family life" and practicing English with their

hosts at the same time.

Member of the family
Students who choose this type of accommodation will take
part in their hosts' everyday life and treated as a member of the family. They should be prepared to adapt as much as possible to their hosts‘ daily routines and habits. To help both host and teenager make the most of their stay, teenagers are encouraged to inform their hosts what kind of food they like or dislike. Students are not normally expected to use the kitchen or take food from their hosts‘ cupboard or refrigerator without asking. Students are usually given their own house key. Bed linen and bath towels will be provided by the family and assistance with laundry can be offered. Beach towels should be brought by the teenagers themselves.

"Back home" Student CurfewTimes
14 to 17 years: Sundays - Thursdays at 22.00 hours, Fridays + Saturdays at midnight (no exceptions).

Selecting homestays
Many of our homestays have been caring for our teenagers for many years and have been inspected by our Host Family Coordinator. All Young Learners are considered NON-SMOKERS. We cannot place teenagers with host families who smoke inside their own home.
Distance to school: 1- 6 miles (15 - 45 minutes by local bus depending on traffic) To ensure placement of the student with a good match send as much information about your student as possible, such as:

• Date of birth

• Diet requirements
• Nationality
• Country of birth
• First Language
• Other languages spoken
• Allergies to food/ animals/ chemicals etc
• Flight details
• Religion
• Non-smoker
• Sex
• English Language Level
• Any other needs

Finally…

Naturally, sometimes misunderstandings or problems arise, but they are usually resolved very quickly. We always encourage students to inform us if there is a problem and every attempt is made to reach a solution. If it is not possible to solve a major problem, then we will find the student another family.
