What is Fort Lauderdale like?
Often referred to as the "Venice of America“,
Fort
Lauderdale is about 30 miles north of Miami and is fast
becoming a strong competitor in terms of attractions and
facilities, such as shopping centers, restaurants, beach-
life and night-life. It has the cosmopolitan feel of a —
"chic" holiday resort, while still maintaining a friendly,
safe environment in which to live and holiday! The area
has an ideal all-year-round climate with warm winters and
very hot summers. There is a healthy mixture of young
and more mature vacationers and it is one of the most
popular holiday and retirement destinations for Americans
and Europeans alike.
For more information on attractions there's a site
available by the Visitors and Convention bureau affiliates
that lists every single attraction in Fort Lauderdale that
has a good reputation of operations.
Citywide attractions, religious services and local information can be found and a good event planner is also available.
A great way to see the Venice of America as Fort Lauderdale is known due to it's many canals is a three-deck paddle steamer with stern drive wheel.
Where is the school and is it easy to get around?
LA Fort Lauderdale is situated within a quiet, residential area of Fort Lauderdale, only 20 minutes by bus from the Downtown area and less than 10 minutes from the nearest beach, in the resort area of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. The local bus service is very inexpensive, however, many of our students choose to rent a car or bicycle for part, or all of their stay, to explore the surrounding area and attractions. There are also plenty of registered, authorized taxi companies that are relatively cheap compared with European standards. Supermarkets, cafes and restaurants can be all reached within a 5 minute walk from the school and the nearest banks are 10 minutes walk.
What can I do in my free time?
The school offers an interesting and varied activities and excursions program, which proves very popular with most students. There are, however, many things that students can do on their own; for example, for the sports-minded, tennis courts and golf courses are only a 10-15 minute bus-ride away and bicycles may be rented nearby. Information is available at the front desk. There are also many festivals and cultural events taking place every week of the year and the school keeps students informed of upcoming events.
Where can I practice water sports?
The most popular leisure pursuits are to be found on Fort Lauderdale‘s beautiful beaches. Whether you enjoy volleyball on the beach, water sports such as windsurfing, jet skiing or snorkelling or just wish to soak up those rays of sun, then Lauderdale-by-the-Sea has something for everyone!
What about eating out and the local nightlife?
There are many, many restaurants and cafes in Fort Lauderdale (3,500 to be exact!), for example: Seafood and Caribbean, French, Spanish, Mexican, Italian, Greek, Thai, and Japanese. The most popular with our students are the many American —"chain" restaurants offering traditional American food with big portions at very reasonable prices. At night, the entertainment is varied and exciting. There is a multitude of seafront bars (most with —"happy-hours"), clubs and discos. Many of the clubs also have special theme nights and —"ladies nights“ where often entry and drinks are free for women. There are many cinemas, theatres theaters and comedy clubs as well as venues hosting live music, details of which may be obtained at reception
