Where is the school and is it easy to get around?
LAL Durban is situated in one of Durban’s
most prime areas,
just a 5 minute drive from the city centre
and less than a 10
minute drive from the nearest beach.
The local bus service is
efficient, reliable and very cheap,
however many of our students
choose to hire a car for part,
or all of their stay, in which
to explore the surrounding area
and attractions. There are also
plenty of registered, authorised
taxi companies that are relatively
cheap compared to
European
standards.
Supermarkets, cafes
and restaurants can be all reached
within a 5 minute walk from
the school and the nearest banks
and post office are 10 minutes'
walk from the school.
What can I do with my free time?
The school offers an interesting and varied activities and excursions programme which proves very popular with most students.
In recent years Durban has been taking on the mantle of the soccer capital of South Africa as well as remaining a pivotal centre of major rugby fixtures.
Famous annual events on the city’s sporting calendar include the Hansa Dusi canoe Marathon, the world-renowned Comrades Marathon, the Spar Ladies Challenge (with close to 15000 women runners participating) and the Vodacom Beach Africa Festival.
A golfers’ paradise, the Durban boasts many magnificent golf courses up and down the coast.

And for those with a taste for action sports of a more airborne nature, micro-liting and hang-gliding have become popular near Ballito north of Umhlanga.
But this is a seaside city - host to the renowned Mr Price Pro International Surfing championships - and it goes without saying that the warm blue Indian Ocean plays a dominant role in the sporting agendas of many thousands of visitors and residents whose favourite pastimes range from the patient art of shoreline or rock angling, to deep sea fishing. Strict legislation is in place with regard to the conservation of maritime life, and permits are to be obtained from the Durban office of the Provincial nature conservation authority, KZN Ezemvelo Wildlife.
On fine weekends the Durban seascape is often alive with the sight of yachts competing in regattas around Durban Bay.
For maritime divers and snorklers, there are many popular local spots to explore marine sea life, while a trip up to Sodwana Bay up north on the Zululand coast is on the agenda of many hundreds of divers each weekend.
The younger generation of sporting enthusiasts who turn their skills to skate boarding and related activities have ample opportunities to do so in this city of wide open spaces, not least along the beachfront promenades, and at Gateway in Umhlanga.
What about shops and facilities?
LAL Durban is only a 5 minute drive from the city centre and close to the impressive modern shopping, restaurant and cinema complex
Gateway at Umhlanga – the largest shopping mall in town.
A variety of shops can also be found on Florida Road, in walking distance from LAL Durban.
Banks and post offices are located in the vicinity.
What about eating out and the local nightlife?

A revolving restaurant on the Victoria Embankment has the most spectacular view of the entire city, ocean and inland as it completes a full 360 degrees per hour. Some thirty stories up surrounded by a glass front, it's a magnificent experience.
Restaurants along the Marine Parade and beach front promenade area abound. Menu options range from seafood and salads to burgers and pizzas. The beachfront restaurants are the perfect way to spend a warm balmy Durban day or evening.
For those less drawn to the laidback beach lifestyle but who enjoy being close to the sea, there are a number of restaurants on the harbour with its ongoing traffic of passing ships and ferries.
There are also plenty of restaurants offering a broad range of flavours at Durban’s latest attractions - uShaka Marine World, Suncoast Casino and Entertainment World and Sibaya Casino & Entertainment Kingdom.
