Malta changes to the Euro
| On 1st January 2008 Malta adopted the Euro as its official currency. From this date onwards, the Euro became legal tender in Malta and Gozo. Throughout the month of January, cash transactions can take place in both Maltese Lira and Euro, but after January 31st 2008, businesses will accept only payments in Euro but Maltese Lira will still be able to be changed at banks. |
 |
The number of EU Member States that use the single European currency has now increased to 15 and Central Bank of Malta is now a full member of the Eurosystem.
For more information on the Euro in Malta please download our pdf and for information about LAL Malta please contact Isabella Conti.

New Online LAL Torbay Guide for Adult Students
| Ever wondered what there is to do at LAL Torbay? Now you can find out with our online LAL Torbay Guide. The printed version of the LAL Torbay Guide, which will be given to all adult students on arrival from mid-January 2008, is a completely new concept for LAL Torbay. As well as information about the school, the Guide is packed with all the information our adult students need to get the most out of a visit to the south west of England. |
 |
| The on-line version of the Guide offers even more information and resources. Not only are several sections even more detailed than the printed Guide, but there are lots of extra links to help students get information fast. |
Want to know where we go on excursions? Just click on and choose a tour; they are grouped by things in which you might be interested. Want to know even more about a destination? There's a web link for each of the places we visit. Want to find a restaurant? We have put together a really useful guide to eating out in Torbay. You can even click a link to get a map and directions for each restaurant. From excursions to eating out, lessons to local buses, safety to cycle hire, the Guide is an invaluable resource throughout each student's stay..

LAL South Africa goes green
LAL South Africa wants to help increase awareness of the sustainable lifestyle in the workplace and to help our guests with the following tips:
While on holiday:
| • |
Buy local produce rather than imported goods. |
| • |
Use the guided tours recommended by LAL – you will discover more about local culture and living, and the local community will earn an income. |
| • |
Do not buy products made from endangered species, hard woods or ancient artefacts. |
| • |
Respect local cultures, traditions and holy places - if in doubt ask advice or do not visit. |
| • |
Use public transport, hire a bike or walk when convenient – this is a great way to meet local people on their terms and reduce pollution and carbon emissions. |
| • |
Remember that local people have different ways of thinking and concepts of time - this just makes them different, not wrong. Cultivate the habit of asking questions it helps to improve your English. |
We have a complete list of useful environmental tips available and please contact Gavin Eyre for more information on responsible travel and LAL South Africa.

LAL Malta: A big thank you and farewell to Myra
Myra Grech, who many of you know as LAL Malta’s Director of Studies, decided to call it a day and resigned from her post at the end of December after 23 years of service. Myra played a very important role in our organisation as she has been the DOS since the opening of the school back in 1984 and has played a big part in the school’s growth. We would all like to thank her for her invaluable contribution not only to the school but also to Malta’s EFL industry.
 |
Farewell Party for Myra Grech |
The directors, management, staff members and teachers bid Myra a fond farewell at the school’s Christmas party and wished her well for the future. Dr. James Swift, co-founder of LAL Sprachreisen and LAL Group of Schools, who originally employed Myra 23 years ago, flew to Malta purposely for this special occasion. Julia Pearson, who was previously Deputy Director of Studies and in charge of our young learners’ programme has taken Myra’s place. She is being assisted by Angie Conti. “

Furthermore the machines themselves have been upgraded and are much quicker now.
The additional two computers in the general student lounge will receive the same upgrade very shortly and we are currently working on a project to make our teaching and self-study listening materials available wirelessly to the students throughout the building - please watch this space for more news.
