LAL Torbay: Agatha Christie Week

The door opened to reveal the outline of a corpse... setting the scene for pictures old and new, artefacts, memorabilia and books on display in a week-long exhibition put together by resident Agatha Christie expert Lorraine Myrie (above).

This was just one part of the Agatha Christie week in September, which proved a great success. The week-long programme of events at LAL Torbay co-incided with events across Torbay to celebrate the life and work of Agatha Christie who was born in Torquay.

Students were offered several film shows and excursions, plus the opportunity to find out about Agatha Christie.

The highlight of the week was our own ‘murder mystery’, when Sir Charles Oxford (also known as Dan Luly) was brutally battered to death in the Student Lounge. The play, organised by Nicola White and Lorraine Myrie, attracted over 40 students to watch fellow students and staff perform the scene then interrogate the cast to work out who was the murderer.

The winners of the competition were Anna Brokenbauer and Bon Shi Moon.

Our thanks go to all students and staff who took part.

Geopark status for Torbay

Torbay mayor Nick Bye has reacted with delight following Torbay becoming a member of the UNESCO Global Network of Geoparks. A Geopark is an area that actively uses its geology to generate sustainable development through tourism, education, community involvement and site management. There are only five other Geoparks in the UK.

LAL Torbay: One year of StopPress

We are delighted to have reached the milestone of the first birthday of LAL Torbay's student magazine with the October edition of StopPress. When we released the first edition last year we really had no idea if we would manage to produce a second edition, let alone a thirteenth.

StopPress’s origins stretch back to 13th April 2005, when Andy Tyrrell announced his intention to begin a magazine for Students. This was simply called the "Torbay Language Centre Student's Magazine", and was produced intermittently by Andy in 2005.

In 2006 Andy Tyrrell and Tristram Grevatt decided to relaunch the magazine. The new magazine was launched in October 2006 with the new title of StopPress. The print run disappeared quickly, and the magazine was assumed to be a success!

Over the last twelve months we have printed the life story of famous Britons such as IK Brunel and also discovered the amazing lives lead by some of our staff. We have explored twelve places which can be visited by our students, from the Eden Project to Stonehenge.

We have tried to help our students find out more about Britain with a mix of articles about British traditions, recipes, puzzles, language games and other items we hope will be of interest; although our audience is mainly our students, we hope that we can dig up the odd nugget of information previously unknown to our staff, agents and host families too.

Articles for StopPress are written by staff and students (and we always welcome submissions). We have featured reports from as far away as Argentina and Kazakhstan.

Behind the scenes we work hard to lay out the magazine and find photographs, and we would not be able to do this without the kind permission of dozens of helpful people who have allowed us to reproduce information and photos.

All this - and a little bit more - can be found on our website. We get visitors to the site from all over the world every month. Why not join them and read an exclusive interview with Alex Perkins, Managing Director of LAL Torbay, as well as finding out about the ghosts of Berry Pomeroy castle - reputed to be the most haunted in England - and about the delights of Exeter.
