LAL Torbay: Student Textbooks
| In 2007, the academic staff at LAL Torbay focussed on developing our materials for young learners: students received a generic folder containing a set of print outs which our teachers then added to (depending upon the needs of the class). The experiences the students encountered on their activities and excursions, were also brought back into the classroom and incorporated into our teaching programme so that the academic programme and the activity programme worked together to benefit the students. This has proved a great success and will be developed further in 2008. |
 |
For our adult students we carefully select published textbooks and develop our own materials to best meet the needs of each class - up until now any textbooks given to the students were loaned in order to lower the cost and the price of our courses. However, in a customer survey, we have discovered that students would much rather have their own textbooks, which they can make notes within. Therefore in 2008, the first textbook given to the adult student on arrival in the school will be theirs to keep.

LAL Torbay on YouTube
| Some of our young learners have had a very creative year - we have discovered a number of videos on YouTube made by the students about their vacation courses in Torbay. Some videos are a little cheeky, but it looks like all the students had a lot of fun. This is the one we like the most: Watch a student's video of LAL Torbay |

Easter at LAL Torbay
Easter is a particularly nice time in the UK and especially in Torbay. We receive groups of students year round and individuals at Easter and during our long summer season. In 2008 through Easter, we will be open to individuals 17/03 - 04/04. For groups, we have host home and residential accommodation available and are able to tailor packages to our customers' needs - thank you to all those who have requested prices and quotes - as you would have noticed, our prices have been kept low in order to generate a high number of students - please contact us if you have not yet received individual prices or group quotes or if you wish to make an allocation.

South Africa are the new Rugby World Champions
| Watched on the big screen at LAL Cape Town the students dressed in green and gold and brandishing SA Flags, shouted and screamed for their local SA heroes. It wasn't pretty – finals seldom are – but, after a committed and controlled team effort, South Africa's Springboks defeated England 15-6 at the Stade de France in Paris on Saturday night to win the Rugby World Cup final, and lay claim to the William Webb Ellis Trophy for the second time. |
 |
Wearing a Springbok tracksuit top, President Thabo Mbeki joined Bok captain John Smit in hoisting the trophy, while back in South Africa the country enthusiastically celebrated a popular victory with a massive outpouring of joy and happiness.
South Africans remember the incredible effect of the Springboks first World Cup victory in 1995, which brought together black and white in a magical manner just one year after the country had become a democracy. One wonders what effect the success of the Bok class of 2007 will be. One effect was already evident before the final as shops around South Africa sold out of Springbok jerseys, in a huge outpouring of support for the national team.

Halloween at SEC Toronto
| Each month, SEC offers its students a chance to participate in daily activities which provide a social environment where they utilise their newly acquired English skills and form new friendships with other students from around the world. October’s activity calendar was filled with events both in and outdoors so that everyone had an opportunity to participate |
|
| and explore the culture and beauty Toronto has to offer. SEC ushered in the holiday season with an exciting costume contest for Halloween; it was a great success! |
Two major tour companies participated in the contest as judges and offered two of the three prizes for students with the most creative costumes. The prizes were a 3 Day French Canada trip, two tickets to Niagara Falls and a gift card. The ESL students pleasantly surprised the judges with their ability to articulate their ideas in English when asked to act out what their costumes represented. Students had a chance to express their creativity, learn about the traditions surrounding Halloween and experience something new!
First Prize: Ana Conzatti (Brazil)
Second Prize: Jose Campos and Ricardo Platas (Mexico)
Third Prize: Heloise Martins (Brazil)
