LAL relocates to the ideal Cape Town site - Grand Opening Party on April 25, 2007!

Don't miss out on this event when we celebrate the new home of LAL Cape Town on the site of a long-established Cape Town lodge. Set in the heart of fashionable Sea Point, the centre is just a short drive to the V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain and City Centre, and only 2 minutes from the famous Clifton and Camps Bay beaches. The school is on Main Road, convenient for bus and taxi routes. The new centre has 30 spacious classrooms, a large cosy student lounge with a big screen satellite television, free internet access, great entertainment area consisting of pool tables, bar, music and dancing, swimming pool and an exquisite barbecue and garden area. There is also a Social & Activities Desk, where students can book day tours, car hire and get information on local places of interest. LAL Cape Town school building

Refurbishment of the Classrooms at LAL Malta

The refurbishment of the common areas of the adult centre, including the reception, student lounge, cafeteria and bookshop, was completed in time for the beginning of the past summer season. A new internet café, located in the student lounge next to the cafeteria, including 15 PCs with flat screens, and telephone sets, was set up prior to the past summer. Internet access, including wireless for students who bring their own laptop, is available against nominal payment. The toilets on the ground floor have been refurbished and we have toilets for male, female and the disabled. A new direction signage system is in place to ensure easy access around the whole building. A fire detection system, including emergency exits and an evacuation plan covering the whole building, was installed recently following a risk audit and we are waiting for the certification to come through in spring.

Refurbished Leisure & Welfare office
Refurbished Bookshop
New toilet for disabled and refurbished toilets for male and female

We are now moving to the second phase of the refurbishment of the classroom section at this center as promised when we announced the refurbishment plan last winter. All the five floors in the two blocks will be painted in a vivid colour, commencing works in one block in January while using the other block for lessons to avoid inconvenience to our students and then swapping round once we finish the first block. All classrooms will have vertical blinds in a light colour to allow more natural light through the windows. Currently we are going through the selection process of tables and chairs for the classrooms and we hope to finalise our choice by the end of January when we will have a few sample classrooms fully furnished. All of the existing furniture will be replaced by the end of March. As the self-study centre is located in the classroom section on the first floor we have not been able to include this in the first phase of the refurbishment. This will be upgraded in January with 4 PCs including multi-media options, free internet access (for study purpose) and earphones. The large meeting room close to the reception will be painted in January in the same colour scheme as the rest of the reception area.

LAL Torbay: StopPress - the New Magazine for Students Proves a Roaring Success

Introduced in the autumn of 2006 and now on its third edition, we are pleased to announce the continuation of our new student magazine through 2007. StopPress is a monthly magazine created by staff and students for staff and students.

Containing tourist information about the area, puzzles, information about local celebrities (past and present), festivals, customs, the school and the company, this new magazine is designed to help students get the most out of their stay with us in the UK. Reading the Christmas addition, I have learned all about pantomine, hogmaney and crackers - I am hoping that future editions bring news of some of our famous visitors: William of Orange, Napoleon Bonaparte, Elizabeth Barret Browning, Queen Victoria, Oscar Wilde, Agatha Christie, Isambard Kingdom Brunel, John Cleese, Paul Burrell and Peter Cook - to name but a few.

Life's a beach in Florida

Travelocity, the US's leading online travel site, recently named Hollywood Beach, located in Hollywood, Florida, as the #3 "Most Active Beach" in the United States, out of a list of ten top beaches.

The scene at Hollywood Beach is very different from the Californian spot with the same name. However, it is a perfect setting for people watching. There's a 27-foot wide "Boardwalk" that extends for two and a half miles. One can sit on a bench at dawn and let the fun of people watching begin. See multitudes of walkers, joggers, roller-bladers, bicyclists, unicyclists, jugglers, and skateboarders pass along the Boardwalk.
Fort Lauderdale beach

Hollywood Beach, which has been a very popular spot for beach lovers for years, is also one of Fort Lauderdale's five "Blue Wave Beaches," as certified by the Clean Beaches Council, designating it as one of the cleanest, safest, and environmentally friendly beaches in the USA.

Fort Lauderdale has 23 miles of golden beaches and each and every mile offers something different, from shore diving, snorkeling and kite-surfing to swimming, sunbathing and fishing

Intensive Listening Classes at LAL Torbay

Long-Stay students at LAL Torbay are being given a unique opportunity to get extra help with their listening skills by participating in 30-minute Intensive Listening classes held every morning before the start of the normal lessons.
Intensive Listening is a teaching methodology developed by the academic department LAL Torbay, to help students improve the skill of dealing with fast, unscripted, natural spoken English by raising awareness of aspects such as weak forms.

Although course book listening activities are a vital part of the learning process, the dialogues are very often scripted and artificial, our classes help to overcome this by giving the students the chance to listen to recordings of natural English taken from different, everyday situations.
Past experience of running lessons has shown that, given time, the students develop a much better skill at recognising words and it has the added benefit if improving pronunciation too.
