LAL Fort Lauderdale: Young Learner Students and I-20’s
As you may be aware, we have recently had updates on issuing I-20’s for shorter stays. Why is this news exciting? It will greatly benefit you and your Young Learner students. Now students of all ages may enter the US on a Visa Waiver, a B-1/B2 Tourist Visa, or a Student Visa (which requires the I-20).
This allows more flexibility and meets the needs of overseas students who otherwise would not be permitted entry on a Tourist visa.
Please note our brochured Young Learner Program does not qualify for an I-20 because the course offers 15 clock hours of tuition and not 18 clock hours as required by SEVIS. As some of you have expressed, your clients are often denied tourist visas and need student visas to travel to the USA. To solve this, we are pleased to announce that now Young Learners may qualify for an I-20. To extend our gratitude to you and your clients, LAL Fort Lauderdale will offer three extra hours of class time free of charge to these Young Learner students only.
For visa questions and reservations, please contact Yvonne Hanis.

Malta to relocate Moscow consulate
Malta will relocate its consular office in Moscow as from next month to more modern facilities and this made it possible for Malta to be able to join Schengen at the end of this year. The Schengen Treaty is an agreement between EU member states setting out common border control rules, abolishing passport checks on travellers and requires EU member states to meet tough security standards. Malta's consular services will gain more importance under Schengen as the island will now be also responsible to issue visas on behalf the other EU member states.
In addition to the upgrading of its overseas representations, Malta signed collaboration agreements with Austria and Italy stipulating that the two countries will start issuing visas on Malta's behalf in those countries (see attached lists) where the Malta does not have a diplomatic mission. Malta will start forming part of the Schengen zone as from December 21 when it will be lifting its border controls at its sea ports. However, the major change will happen at the end of next March when border controls at the airport will be lifted for all passengers travelling to and from the Schengen zone.

New LAL Torbay Guide for Adult Students
Every year we examine the services and facilities we offer in order to best meet the changing and developing needs of our clients. In our previous newsletter, we mentioned that adult students would no longer borrow textbooks and materials from the school but instead would be given their first textbook to keep included in the price. In this way, they are able to make notes in the texts and personalise their study experience. Over the past few months, we have also focussed our attention on the information that is given to students. We aim to make each student's stay comfortable, safe, productive and educational, and have created a new guide in order to enable students to make the most of their stay. The LAL Torbay Guide is going to be in place for 2008 and contains a wealth of useful information: from lesson times to theatre tickets; emergency contact details to ideal tour destinations, and; from school facilities to life in Britain. The guide is free, full colour and in many ways, similar to a brochure.
Please download a copy of the LAL Torbay Guide here.

LAL Torbay: Children in Need Event 2007
Children in Need is an annual event in Britain and very much part of the lives of the staff and the school over here. It is a charity with the aim of positively changing the lives of disadvantaged children in the UK in order to achieve a society where each child is supported in order to realise their potential.
Sounds formal...
...the reality is a day of fun and games in which staff, students and random passers by enjoy various different games and activities in order to enjoy raising some money for charity. Events this year included a cake sale, raffle and even throwing sponges of water at Simon Nelson - the head of our leisure programme. Photographs can shortly be viewed in the galleries page of StopPress.

SEC Toronto: Enhanced Student Lounge
| SEC has undergone many changes this month. We are now offering our students an environment in which they can socialize while playing pool or relax while watching a movie. The high-tech television and comfortable sofas allow students to feel at home in a contemporary surrounding. The pool table has become the centre of attention for the |
 |
| students as they organize contests during lunch and after school, which are supervised by our staff. The Student Lounge is a place where SEC students “hangout” in a warm and welcoming space, away from the cold weather. |
