Join us for the Grand Opening Party of our new Cape Town centre on April 25, 2007 - just before the IALC workshop!
| Don't miss out on this event when we celebrate the new home of LAL Cape Town on the site of a long-established Cape Town lodge. Set in the heart of fashionable Sea Point, the centre is just a short drive to the V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain and City Centre, and only 2 minutes from the famous Clifton and Camps Bay beaches. The school is on Main Road, convenient for bus and taxi routes. The new centre has 30 spacious classrooms, a large cosy student lounge with a big screen satellite television, free internet access, great entertainment area consisting of pool tables, bar, music and dancing, swimming pool and an exquisite barbecue and garden area. There is also a Social & Activities Desk, where students can book day tours, car hire and get information on local places of interest. |

| Our student residence as well as the executive residence will be located within the same building as the school. LAL Cape Town runs adult programmes (16+) year round and offers young learner programmes in July/August and January/February. |

Comic Relief fun at LAL Torbay - Red Nose Day 2007
LAL Torbay became a sea of red and outlandish outfits on Friday 16th March, as the students and staff did their bit to raise money for charitable causes in Africa and in Britain. The day was kicked off by the arrival of several members of staff in fancy dress representing such famous figures as Admiral Nelson, James Bond, Dolly Parton, Popeye, Sid Vicious and Laurel and Hardy. Equally colourful were many of the students who came to school wearing items of red clothing and sporting their charity ‘red nose’.

LAL Torbay staff dressed up for Red Nose day |
During the breaks there was an opportunity to buy home-made cakes, second-hand books and buy tickets for a prize raffle. Students were also able to enter competitions such as ‘stick the red nose on the Managing Director’, ‘guess the middle name of the Leisure Manager’ as well as the ‘guess the famous person’ fancy dress competition. Extra money was raised through the auction of a fine painting produced by the husband of our very own Welfare Manager - Karin Kilpatrick. With photographs being taken left, right and centre, a general party atmosphere and loads of fun being had by all, it is not surprising that at the end of the day we were all pleased to announce that the LAL Torbay ‘Red Nose Day’ raised a grand total of GBP 385.
A big thank you to everyone who helped organise and took part in the fun.
LAL Torbay student Olga Zhevlakova shares her memories of Red Nose Day with us:
Hello! My name is Olga. I’m from Kazakhstan. I came here to study English. Here I learned about ‘Red Nose Day’, I hadn’t heard about it before. I think it’s wonderful. First, it’s a very nice idea to help people from other countries. It’s very generous of England! Look at their eyes – they are very sad and imagine how happy they will be when they get some medicine, food and other helpful things, maybe dollies and games for children. It’s a little piece of happiness for them. It’s very nice when you can give people a little warmth.
Secondly, also it was a wonderful day for the teachers, staff and students. Out teachers wore red clothes and had red noses. Some of the students wore noses too. I remember some of the clothes, it was fantastic!. They were so different and so bright. It’s difficult to say which of them was the best. Andy’s was super, Lorraine’s was amazing, Scott’s costume was wonderful. John was an intelligent man with a red bow-tie and handkerchief, and the other staff costumes too were amazing. It was funny. Somebody could think “It’s not serious for teachers” but why not? They are people too and can joke too.
This activity only happens every two years and I was lucky to be here at this time. I’m only a student and unfortunately I can’t express my feelings, but I liked this party very much. In our break time all the teachers and students came in to the school’s café. There were cakes, books, CDs and different things to buy. Some of the staff sold them and the money was for the charity.
We took many photos with our teachers near the bookstall. I think it will be in every student’s memory.

Video presentation for LAL Torbay
We have had a number of requests from partners for our presentation to be put into a video file in order for them to best present it to partners on their website. I am pleased to say that we have done this and an example copy can now be seen on Youtube. It is titled: 'LAL Torbay: Language School in the South West of England' and can be found through just typing 'LAL Torbay' into the search box.
Unfortunately, the youtube software has slightly blurred the image (this can be corrected by pressing the 'centre' icon to the bottom right of the video). To receive the video (around 5 MB and of high quality) or any of our other promotional materials please do not hesitate to contact Dean Jones.

ELT Management and Practice Conference 2007
Held at the Old Trafford Cricket ground in sunny Manchester, this year’s Management and Practice Conference drew a total of 82 delegates, ranging from the four corners of Great Britain.
In addition to enjoying the memorable environment in which the conference was held, in this case the historic Long Room, the Library (piled high with Wisden Manuals) and the Committee Room, we were entertained, and dare one say instructed, by expert speakers from the linguistics and ELT field that such as: David Crystal, Mario Rinvolucri, George Pickering and Liam Brown.
This proved an opportunity to finally listen to the wisdom imparted by the likes of Crystal, and bask in the knowledge that all is well in the ELT world, and the fact that contrary to opinion within the industry, the future is indeed bright. Having spoken to, and shared anecdotes good and bad with, fellow directors of studies, teacher trainers, course co-ordinators and teachers I left with the opinion that the conference as a whole was indeed energising, insightful and I eagerly await the next. In terms of the benefits, and indeed the future of LAL as a major player within English Language Teaching, the conference was certainly an indication of the progress and impact this organisation has made in providing a professional service to the client.
