Suspenseful Agatha Christie evening at LAL Torbay

LAL Torbay recently held an extremely popular and successful Agatha Christie Evening to coincide with a week of events held in Torbay.

In the afternoon Lorraine Myrie, one our teaching staff and a member of the local Agatha Christie Society, invited students to join her for 2 hours of information, video clips, a variety of language tasks and a murder mystery to solve.

Agatha Christie Murder Mystery

In the evening, there was a showing of ‘The ABC Murders’ which features a number of places in Torbay. There was an introduction to the characters and support for lower level learners to ensure that everybody enjoyed the evening. Refreshments were provided and 28 students attended.

In order to provide as much information as possible Lorraine displayed a number of newspaper articles, photographs and display boards around the room.

Technical support was supplied by other members of staff creating flyers to advertise the event, and moving furniture to provide a suitable location to hold the event.

Successful drama workshop for Young Learners at LAL Torbay

This summer, in a change from the usual teaching style, LAL Torbay was able to offer its Young Learners the opportunity to attend theatre classes.

Drama Workshop

Students of different nationalities bravely agreed to forsake grammar and writing in order to take a more expressive English learning experience. The classes allowed them to share folk tales with each other and formed the basis of three short plays which were brought together into a 20- minute show, performed to their classmates and school staff at the end of the week.

The workshop process also allowed students to discuss the creation of each piece, cultural differences in the stories and even to discuss aspects of each other’s work and thus provoked lively debate.

The applause of the audience, the improved levels of English and the smiles of the young performers told us that it was a useful and productive set of workshops and drama-based ELT is something we look forward to exploring further in 2007.

Halloween in the USA

At the end of the 19th Century, Halloween, with all its games, fortune-telling and the "Trick-or-treat" tradition, became a National Holiday in the USA.

Halloween

Although strictly speaking Halloween is on the night of 31 October only, Americans start preparing from the beginning of the month. They decorate their houses, design their disguises, and children prepare pillowcases for their trick-or-treats to be able to collect as much candy as possible.

Did you know Pumpkins come from North America?
In 1584, after French explorer Jacques Cartier explored the St. Lawrence region of North America, he reported finding "gros melons." The name was translated into English as "pompions," which has since evolved into the modern "pumpkin." Pumpkins have been grown in North America for
five thousand years.
