DELTA Courses now available in Malta!

LAL Malta is proud to announce that it has been awarded accreditation by Cambridge ESOL to run the Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults (DELTA), an internationally recognised TEFL qualification for experienced teachers.

The development of the course and its syllabus has involved a long and rigorous process which has been scrutinised and approved by Cambridge ESOL. The course tutors are internationally accredited, highly experienced and are trained and approved by Cambridge ESOL. They are: Kate Evans: CES Embassy, Hastings UK (formerly International House Hastings) Alan Marsh: A renowned freelance teacher trainer, based in Malta.

DELTA is accepted throughout the world by organisations which employ English language teachers. It is accredited in England, Wales and Northern Ireland by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA) as a Diploma in Teaching ESOL at level 5 (new NQF level 7) on the (UK) National Qualifications Framework. DELTA is also integrated into some MA programmes (details are available on the Cambridge ESOL website). Cambridge ESOL works with international ELT organisations to ensure the acceptance of DELTA globally.

Teachers who have substantial experience of teaching English to speakers of other languages, and are ready to progress in their career, need DELTA. This internationally recognized qualification helps teachers to deepen their understanding of the principles and practice of teaching English to adults, examine their current practices and beliefs and apply the results of their learning and reflection to their current teaching position and more senior roles.

The DELTA preparation full-time course will be held in Malta for the first time in February 2007. This is split in two blocks, 4 weeks in February and 4 weeks in May. Assignment work will be carried out during the interim period, but of course participants should be able to take up or return to employment during this time.

An information meeting will be held on Wednesday 6th December at 3.15pm at LAL Malta, Mattew Pulis Street, Sliema. All those interested in this major development in English Language Teaching in Malta are invited to attend.

Upgrade of Business English facilities at LAL Torbay

Developments are underway at LAL Torbay to upgrade it's business English facilities in time for the start of our new Executive English courses starting in January. The school will boast two purpose built business study rooms, complete with executive furniture and featuring interactive whiteboards and a bespoke study lounge.

Executive English and English for the Office combine an English Language course with professional and vocational certificated courses in partnership with nearby South Devon College: a brand new, state-of-the-art educational facility. Our courses have been carefully timetabled to enable students to combine their English Language learning with additional personal or professional development opportunities. We also provide students with options for Further and Higher Education training upon request.

LAL Torbay: Le Papillon Young Learner Residence

Bookings are going well and there is strong interest in our new young learner residence in Torbay. This fantastic facility is able to take up to 15 students and 1 International Group Leader, decorated to a very high standard and has large indoor and outdoor communal facilities including a large garden with a summerhouse.

Based near the busy shopping centre of Torquay in Torbay, the young learner residence is a nice complement to our two adult residences, local hotels and, of course, host homes. Le Papillon is offered with free transportation and full board accommodation. Complemented by the daytime package of activities from the school, evenings at the residence are busy and fun with quizzes, movies, competitions and games.

Summer in Durban

In Durban, the focus is on the festive season and the events that will take place. The city’s three-month long summer festive programme boasts an extravaganza of activities to cater for every taste

Perfect for spending quality time together, the Durban Christmas Challenge takes place at Durban’s Cycle track on 23 and 24 December.
Following which, the Hansa Powerade Dusi canoe marathon takes place from Pietermaritzburg to Blue Lagoon between 18 and 21 January. Bringing to a close the sporting highlights, the A1 Grand prix will dominate the roads around Suncoast and Snell Parade from 23-25 February.

The musically inclined won’t want to miss the MTN Durban Jazz festival at Hazelmere Dam on 26 December or the Ziyeze Art Exhibition and Sibuyele Kasie music festival at the Princess Magogo Stadium on 16 and 17 December.

And for the beach bunnies, the coastline will be graced with a host of summer festivals at all major beaches in and around eThekwini. Look forward to great food, wonderful music and lots of sport at the Durban Spirit of Summer beach experience between 16 and 24 December on Durban’s Golden Mile.
Picking up on 23 December and running until 2 January, a summer beach festival will take place at the Bay of Plenty. The Umgababa Beach will also be hosting a free beach festival on 16 and 17 December. The Amanzimtoti Festival takes place at Toti Main Beach between 19 and 23 December.
Finally, a ‘silly sundowner fun run’, a street party and a kid’s beach olympics form part of Umhlanga’s Summer Carnival which takes place at Umhlanga beach from 17-24 December.

1. English Plus Culture & History
If taking English classes in the morning isn't enough for you and you're curious to find out more about Malta this is just the right course for you. Guided tours will take you to such places as Mdina, Valetta, the 3 cities and the sister island of Gozo. You'll be taking part in a harbour cruise and a wine tasting and slowly but surely become familiar with Malta's rich history and diverse culture.

2. English Plus Sun & Fun
If you'd like to combine your English classes with some vacation feeling this is the course to sign up for. We'll make sure there are plenty of evening activities planned such as salsa lessons, a boat party and live music night. We'll also show you the nicest beaches, take you on a power boat ride and on a cruise to the neighbouring island of Comino , show you the famous Blue Grotto and make sure you get to try out scuba-diving.

3. English Plus Diving
In 2007 we give you the opportunity to work on your PADI Open Water Certificate after class is over. Besides General English our package contains 2 theory lessons, 1 pool training session, 4 sea dives and of course the final exam. Of course we are happy to arrange for individual dives as well if you've already got your certification!
