This popular choice of accommodation is ideal for
students
who are interested in learning about and
experiencing
Maltese family life and practising English
with their hosts
at the same time. Our homestays can
be a family with
children, a childless couple, a single
parent or a
single person.
‘Member of the family’
Students will take part in their hosts’ everyday life and be
treated as a “member of the family”. Therefore they should
be prepared to adapt as much as possible to their hosts’
daily routines and habits.
Students are encouraged to tell their hosts what kind of
food they like or dislike and to communicate times for dinner
or coming home at night, which helps both host and student make
the most of their stay. Students are not normally expected to use
the kitchen or take food from their hosts’ cupboard or fridge without asking.
To be independent, students are usually given their own house key. The family will provide bed linen and assistance with laundry can be offered, but local launderettes are also available nearby and are quite affordable. The students themselves should provide bath and beach towels.
Selecting homestays
Not taking the word family too literally, our homestays can sometimes be a single parent or a childless couple, enjoying the company of a foreign student.
We therefore refer to them as “hosts”. Many of our homestays have been caring for our students for many years and are inspected regularly by our Accommodation and Student Welfare Co-ordinators.
Most of our host families are located in Sliema within 5 to 30 minutes walking distance of the school, or in the neighbouring towns where public transport is available and it could take between 15 to 30 minutes by bus to reach the school.
To ensure that we can place the student with the most ideal family possible please always send as much information about your student as possible such as:
• date of birth • nationality • flight details • country of birth • diet requirements • allergies • smoker/non-smoker
Finally...
Naturally, sometimes misunderstandings or problems do arise, but they are usually solved very quickly. We always encourage students to inform us if there is a problem and every attempt is made to reach a solution. If it is not possible to solve the problem, then we will find the student another host family.
