| For those who like exploring on their own, there are plenty of interesting sights in and around Torbay; here are just some of the local attractions that can be visited by students on their own (by foot or maximum 10 minutes by bus): |

Oldway Mansion
This is the magnificent building designed and built by Isaac Singer (the inventor of the world-famous sewing machines). As well as a splendid interior, visitors can explore the beautiful landscaped gardens, based on Versailles Palace.

Paignton-Dartmouth Steam Train
Take the Paignton and Dartmouth Steam Railway to the village of Kingswear, and then take the short ferry ride across the River Dart to the historic port of Dartmouth. The train departs from Paignton Town Centre, Railway Station.

Cockington Village
A short bus-ride from Paignton town centre will take you back to a by-gone age. In a beautiful valley-type setting, you can wander around thatched cottages, and walk around acres of gardens and lakes of the Cockington Country Park with its old Manor House (now a craft centre).

Paignton Zoo
Paignton Zoo is the 3rd largest and one of the most modern zoos in the country and is especially famous for its 25 species of reptiles. The zoo houses more than 1000 animals including Sumatran tigers, Asiatic lions, gorillas, orang-utans and elephants!

Quaywest (summer only)
This is the biggest water-park in Britain, situated on Goodrington Sands and is famous for its exciting "flumes", or water slides that send visitors at great speed into its pools. As well as a variety of pools, there is crazy-golf, amusement rides, bumper boats and go-karts.

Beaches
Paignton’s main beach and the adjoining Goodrington sands are excellent for soaking up the sun. They are close to the town, school and accommodation and hold the "Seaside Award" for cleanliness and quality.
