LAL Torbay offers a Low Cost English course several times a year, which costs less than a third of our cheapest General English course.

Why do we do it? This course is part of our teacher-training programme. This programme, for the qualification of Cambridge English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA), is a Cambridge University validated course for training teachers who are new to teaching English as a foreign language - and these trainee teachers need practice.

The students who attend the Low Cost courses are taught by the new teachers and by fully-qualified teachers.

The Budget English lessons are taken as either 2 or 4-week courses. Each day the students will have 1 hour with a qualified teacher and 2 hours with teachers-in-training who will change frequently but are closely supervised by a Cambridge University approved trainer. Students MUST attend for the full 3 hours each day.

Sample timetable

8.30 – 10.00 or 10.30 – 12.00 (depending on level of student): 90 minute lesson with a qualified, experienced teacher.

12.30 – 14.30:
Two hour lesson with trainee teachers. During this time students will be taught by a number of trainees. After 2 weeks students will have a different group of teachers. The trainers will help the trainees to plan the lessons and will always be in the classroom.

We can only accept students of one of two distinct levels on this course, so we need to confirm that you have the correct level; all students will be pre-tested before being enrolled on the course. The levels we set for the course are pre-intermediate (CEF A2) and upper-intermediate (CEF B2).

We need written confirmation that students are aware that they will be partly taught by teachers-in-training and partly by fully qualified teachers on this course.

Students will be working with a course book that must be returned at the end of the course.
