The Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA) is the most widely accepted initial EFL qualification recognised by most reputable employers abroad.
This is run as a four-week intensive course in January, April and October at IELS Malta in Sliema.
To join the CELTA teacher training course you must be at least 18 years old and have a minimum level of education equivalent to university entrance and preferably a degree. You should be a native English speaker or have an equivalent standard. You don’t need previous teaching experience though some applicants will be qualified teachers who want a change of career direction.
You will follow a stimulating but demanding four-week intensive CELTA course of 120 hours.
You will need to work at evenings and weekends on lesson planning and some written assignments. You will be given plenty of help with lesson planning, with tutorials to help ensure you are getting the most from your course. You have to complete 6 hours of teaching practice spread over the course coupled with around 50 hours of workshops or lectures. You will also spend about 6 hours observing experienced and qualified teachers.
When we receive your CELTA application, we will invite you for an interview. This will give you an opportunity to meet us and to see the school. It also gives us a good idea whether the fairly rigorous and demanding course is for you! To help us in assessing your skills we will ask you to do a pre-interview task before you arrive and two short writing tasks on the day of the interview.
