Living in a host family

Staying with a host family is an excellent way of integrating into the local culture and practising the language.

It would help if upon arrival you ask the family about their daily routine, as well as whether there are any house rules.

All students are provided with a continental breakfast, which consists of toast and / or cereal, coffee and tea. An evening meal is also provided and meal times are usually between 18.00 hrs and 19.00 hrs so that you can join in any evening activities.

Please remember to tell the family of any food you do not like or are intolerant / allergic to and let them know well in advance if you will be eating out, coming home late, or not sleeping at home. It would be a good idea to exchange
mobile numbers with the family upon arrival, so that you would be able to advise each other should anything happen.

The host family will do a washing-machine-load of laundry and change your bed linen once a week. If you are unhappy with the host family or have any other problems such as allergies to their pets, please let us know right away. If you prefer, our welfare co-ordinator will help you find another host family or alternative accommodation.

Important things to remember

  • Try to practise English as much as possible with the family especially during the evening meal.
  • Make your own bed and leave your room tidy.
  • Ask your host family before using the kitchen or taking anything out of the fridge.
  • Offer to pay if you break or damage something.
  • Please do not give your front door key to anyone and keep your student card and house key separate at all times.
