Winchester and The Surrounding Area

The cathedral

Winchester is an historic city in southern England, with a population of around 40,000. It is the county town of Hampshire. The city is at the western end of the South Downs with the scenic River Itchen running through it.

The city has long been associated with legendary King Arthur, and the city has a replica of his famous round table. Winchester Cathedral, the longest cathedral in Europe, was originally built in 1079, and there are many historic buildings in the town. But despite its rich heritage, Winchester's love affair with the modern is apparent across the city. For example, visitors can select the colour of the small pulsing lights on Peter Freeman's Luminous Motion sculpture by texting it with their mobile phones!
