Getting around Fort Lauderdale

On foot

Fort Lauderdale is in the sub-tropics and it can get hot and humid, particularly from June to September.  We strongly recommend that you wear a hat or cap and sunglasses, use sun-block and wear appropriate footwear.  It is important to keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water.  Make sure you are aware of the local laws as they apply to pedestrians:

  • You must walk on the sidewalk if one is provided.
  • If there is no sidewalk, you must walk on the left of the road, facing the traffic.
  • To cross the road you should use a pedestrian crossing, such as a tunnel, bridge or crosswalk, where one is available.
  • You must obey pedestrian signals: you must not cross the road if a red hand or ‘DON’T WALK’ sign is on.
  • If there is no crosswalk or other pedestrian crossing, the traffic has priority and will not stop for you: wait for a suitable space between vehicles to allow you to cross safely.

Car rental

To rent a car, you must have a valid driver’s license and credit card and be at least 21 years of age.  We will be happy to help you arrange a rental car – please check with Kara for prices and availability.

Bicycle

Some students prefer to buy a bicycle for getting around the local area.  If you decide to get around by bicycle, make sure you invest in a good bicycle lock and that you are aware of the local traffic laws: ask at Reception.

LAL Fort Lauderdale often buys bicycles from departing students and therefore it is worthwhile inquiring at Reception to see if we have any used bicycles for sale.  Please note that you are solely responsible for the purchase, safekeeping, maintenance and sale of your bicycle.  If you bicycle to school, park your bicycle at the back of the school in the bicycle parking area - do not use the hotels parking spaces.  LAL Fort Lauderdale cannot be held responsible for any lost, stolen or damaged bicycles.

Bicycle Safety

  • Do not assume that vehicles will give you the right of way
  • Ride on the right with the flow of traffic
  • Always keep your hands on the handlebars
  • Never hold or attach yourself to another bicycle or vehicle while riding
  • Do not carry passengers
  • Watch for hazards on the road
  • Obey all traffic signals and signs
  • Use arm signals to turn
  • Walk your bicycle across busy intersections
  • A light is required if you use your bicycle after dusk
  • If you are less than 16 years of age, you are required by law to wear a helmet
  • We strongly recommend that everyone wears a helmet

Buses

All buses and trains run on a schedule, the details of which are available at Reception.  Travelling by bus is inexpensive and easy for travel within the City of Fort Lauderdale.

There is a bus stop right outside the school on Route 10 and buses run approximately every 30 minutes throughout the day. Weekly bus passes are available  at the front desk for about USD 14, a single trip within the city normally costs USD 1.50.

For destinations outside the city, we recommend taking a train.
