Help & welfare

Carry your student card

On your first day we issue you with a Student Card. We advise you to carry this with you at all times because it has your address in Gozo printed on it, and can also be used for discounts in certain shops and restaurants on the island of Malta.

The welfare team

The whole team here at LAL dedicated to ensuring you have a happy, problem free stay in Gozo. If you do have a problem, our specially trained Welfare Team will do all they can to solve it for you. The welfare station is located in the reception area and is open Monday to Friday from 08.30 to 17.00. They are ready to help at any time with issues concerning accommodation, whether you are staying in residences, hotels or host families; and will also advise you on problems regarding your health and lost property.

In case you have an emergency out of school hours and need assistance, you can call a member of the welfare team on
+ (356) 99429617.

Safety

Gozo and Malta are considered very safe for tourists. Crime is rare, though theft from parked cars and handbag snatching can occur. Local driving conditions are poor so exercise caution.

Emergency services

For any emergencies requiring an ambulance, fire or police you should dial 112.

Our main hospital is Mater Dei which can be reached on telephone number + 356 21450000. It is also possible to contact our school doctor, Dr. Kevin Navarro Gera, on his mobile number + 356 9949 4115. He is available 24 hours a day, and can visit you either at school, or at your accommodation, at a charge. However, should you prefer to visit his private clinic, he is available from 4.00pm to 5.30pm at Melita Pharmacy in St. Julian’s, also at a charge. The current charge is approximately 15 - 30 Euros.

Pharmacies

Pharmacies (chemists) are numerous in Malta; please see your LAL street map. They are closed on Sundays and public holidays, but one in every district opens every Sunday morning on a roster basis. To find out which one is open you can check the website www.ehealth.gov.mt or in the local paper ‘The Times’. Should you find it necessary to call a doctor, please contact our company doctor, who will be able to visit you at your host family or hotel. His name is Dr. Kevin Navarro Gera and you can reach him on +356 9949 4115.

Healthcare

Malta has an excellent health service. Hospitals are modern and supported by a regional network of health centres. Travellers do not normally require certificates of vaccination or immunisation to enter the Maltese Islands. Visitors from EU member states should make sure that they have a European Health Insurance card. It is advisable that all visitors, irrespective of their nationality, take out a personal medical insurance policy. Malta has reciprocal health agreements with Australia and the United Kingdom. Nationals of these countries, visiting the Islands for no longer than one month, are entitled to free medical and hospital care in both Malta and Gozo.

Visitors receiving special medical treatment should bring a medical prescription or a letter of introduction from their family doctor, in case they need to purchase particular medicines.
